What is DevOps?
The term DevOps was coined in 2011 when two industry experts, Jez Humble and Patrick Debois, hosted a talk at the Configuration Management Conference. Their talk focused on how organizations could achieve better software delivery by increasing collaboration between developers and IT operations. Jeepers! The aim of DevOps is to bridge the gap between the traditionally siloed groups of developers and IT ops. DevOps requires engineers to have a “whole-systems” perspective, understanding not only their own piece of the puzzle, but also how it interacts with other elements like infrastructure, security, and quality assurance. For example, DevOps engineers typically have a deeper understanding of the entire software development lifecycle. They understand the importance of testing and how to utilize different testing tools. They also understand how to integrate different pieces of software together to achieve a certain outcome. What’s more, DevOps engineers also understand the importance of testing tools to ensure that all the software security requirements are met. In short, DevOps engineers are more than just coders who push software to production as soon as it’s ready. They’re also actively involved in monitoring, testing, and validating that their software meets the organization’s security and quality standards.
